Top 5 Haunted House Flicks of the Noughties
Slasher flicks have dominated the horror genre for the past years, but if you’re the type of horror fan who wants bone-deep chills, you’ll want movies with psychological thrills. The haunted house film is one of the scariest sub-genres of horror. It strikes terror in a lot of people because it has a realistic subject – the home. And most of us have homes right?
If you do a search for the scariest horror films on the web, the results you’ll get will surely be movies made decades ago, like The Shining, Poltergeist, The Changeling, and The Haunting. They’re classics for sure, but it would get you thinking if there are no more good horror movies being produced in the 2000s.
The first decade of the new millennium is over, and it’s already been named as the Noughties (2000-2009). So it’s a good time for us to make a top 5 list of the best haunted house films of the decade. You’ll be surprised that these modern day horror films can actually be as scary as your favorite haunted house classics.
5. Dark Water (2002)
“It’s okay, mama’s here.”
You might have heard of Dark Water and the negative things that people say about it – but they’re referring to the American remake. The original Japanese one is way creepier. It’s about a mother and her daughter living in an apartment constantly leaking dark water from a mysterious source. This movie is from the people behind Ringu, so you’re in good hands if you want to be scared real bad.
4. The Amityville Horror (2005)
“This house is bad, Mommy.”
Are you surprised that this remake of the original 1979 film is number four on this list? You might find the original Amityville film much better, but this remake deserves a place on this list. It made great use of the technological advancement in special effects so there are a lot more shocks and scares in here than the original. Plus, it’s based on a true story – what’s scarier than that?
3. Ju-on: The Grudge (2003)
“Who’s that boy upstairs?!”
This might not seem a haunted house movie, but in its very core it really is. A brutal tragedy happened in a family’s home which caused the haunting in this film. But what’s scarier is that the “ghosts” don’t just stay inside the house. Anyone who sets foot in the house gets “infected” and is scared to death hours or days after. What’s even more terrifying is that these “infected” people can also spread the curse of the grudge to other people.
2. The Others (2001)
“Sometimes the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead.”
Who knew Nicole Kidman would be great in a psychological-horror film? She played the part of the unconvinced mother perfectly. Her two children who have a sickness where they can’t be exposed to sunlight are also very convincing. Add to that the three servants who appear out of nowhere and you get a very atmospheric film that’ll spook you out of your seats. It also has one of the greatest twist endings I’ve ever seen in a horror film.
1. Paranormal Activity (2007)
“I feel it. I feel it breathing on me.”
The newest movie on this list is also the scariest one. Paranormal Activity was a surprise box-office and critical hit with next to unknown stars and director. But the realistic footages shown of a couple being haunted by something inside their house will certainly get under your skin. The fact that this strange events are happening to normal people like you and me, makes Paranormal Activity a genuinely frightening haunted house film – it may even be the best horror film of the decade.
